Zimbabwe is the only country on the African continent that has the largest deposits of stone suitable for sculpting. Zimbabwe has a long stone carving tradition dating back to the Munhumutapa Empire in the 12th century.
The primary carving stones in Zimbabwe are Springstone, Opal, Cobalt, Serpentine, Verdite, butterjade, dolomite, lapidolite, leopard rock, limestone and Soapstones.
Stones are usually classified into four groups each defined by its hardness or carvability. Soapstone is the and granite is thefourth hardest stones for carving. Within each type of carving stone there is also varying degrees of hardness. Please note thatthe stone you will receive is unfinished and the final sculpture will vary according to your finishing techniques.
Carving stones are available in free-form shapes only. Stones will not be cut to specific shapes and/or sizes. When completing "quantity amount", please enter approximate weight of stone required. We will confirm availabliity prior to processing your order. Pricing listed on a per pound basis.
