The OCC shipped to the KapStone Kraft Paper Corporation is processed in a pulper and then goes through screening and cleaning processes. Although we have state of the art equipment to deal with contaminants, it is still imperative that all OCC used in our process meets the stated OCC quality specifications.
We use OCC in many grades. Some contain a small amount of recycled fiber while some are made entirely of recycled fiber. In order to meet our customer’s quality expectations, we must ensure that our incoming raw material quality is excellent. Most of us have heard the computer programming adage “garbage in, garbage out.” That certainly sums up what can happen in our papermaking process
The ISRI OCC definition is outlined and is the industry standard quality definition. However, the ISRI specifications do not discuss dangerous materials. More information on outthrows, prohibitive as well as dangerous materials is outlined below:
Dangerous Materials: Dangerous Materials are any materials or chemicals that may be hazardous to human health. The safety and well being of our employees is the first priority at KapStone Kraft Paper Corporation, therefore, we have a ZERO TOLERANCE policy regarding dangerous materials. If dangerous materials are found in a load of OCC, that load will be immediately rejected. Dangerous materials include (but are not limited to) Medical Waste , Hazardous Chemicals , Dead Animals, Carcasses, Etc.
Prohibitives: Prohibitives consist of any material that will make our finished product unusable or can damage equipment. One percent of this material can result in the load being rejected. Prohibitives include waxed boxes and non-paper items such as glass, plastic, wood and metals.
Outthrows: Outthrows consist of papers containing additives, coatings and short fibers that must be limited in our manufacturing process. Although, in most cases, these papers can be pulped, they must be limited in our raw materials to ensure quality of finished products. Typical outthrows are listed on the left. Any load containing in excess of 5% of these materials may be subject to rejection.
REMEMBER: Outthrows and Prohibitives are limited to a combined 5%. For example, if the load contains 1% prohibitives, the outthrows can be no more than 4%.Packaging & Shipping
