As the wave travels through the tissue, cells are activated to produce proteins that “turn on healing”.In the TPLO study mentioned above, a group of dogs underwent postoperative acoustic shock wave therapy immediately after surgery and at the time of suture removal. A similar number of dogs of approximately the same size, weight, age, etc. were used as the non-treatment group for comparison. At four weeks the acoustic shock wave group had significantly higher healing scores based on radiographic (X-ray) evaluation and all of the acoustic shock wave osteotomies were healed at 8 weeks compared to less than half of the non-treatment group.Costs for acoustic shock wave therapy are nominal.
