4>,Advantages of Horse and Cow Stall Mats
A growing number of horse owners, as well as professional institutions (such as animal hospitals and universities) are covering their stalls with 'stall mats'. These are usually made of rubber, although one can also get stall mats made out of other materials (such as EVA) which are high-technology alternatives to rubber.
The growing popularity of stall mats is due to their advantages over traditional surfaces, such as concrete:
- Comfort. Rubber mats are both more yielding and warmer than concrete floors. This is more comfortable for the horse and also healthier. For example, the softer surface reduces the risk of injury.
- Traction. Rubber is less slippery when wet, especially in the case of mats which have textured surfaces. This makes them better for stall areas and in particular to washing areas (where the combination of water and soap can make footing uncertain).
- Sterilization. Rubber provides a smooth and solid surface which is easy to sterilize with a disinfectant.
- Reduced Bedding. Many owners find that they require less bedding with stall mats than with a bare floor. This is because the mats perform part of the function of bedding (insulation, shock absorption, traction) and partly because they allow urine to drain off so less bedding is soiled.
