A urinalysis is an important component of a complete clinical diagnostic workup that includes: urine analyzer, gross observations of the urine color and clarity, measurement of specific gravity and an examination of the urinary sediment. The urinary chemistries are important indicators for renal disease, diabetes mellitus, hyperadrenocorticism, hypoadrenocorticism, urinary tract infections and neoplasia. In most veterinary clinic settings, urine analyzer are tested using an inexpensive, disposable urine reagent strip. These urine strips contain a set of absorbent pads, each embedded with chemicals that react with urine components to provide colorimetric changes designed to either be interpreted by the user against a color chart or in some cases measured by an instrument. Analyses measured typically include: bilirubin (BIL), glucose (GLU), protein (PRO), specific gravity (SG), pH, and blood/hemoglobin (BLD). 1)The urine analyzer contains light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit light at various wavelengths.
Reading is done electro-optically:
2)The LED emits light of a defined wavelength onto the surface of the test pad at an optimum angle. The light hitting the test zone is reflected more or less intensely depending on the color produced on the test pad, and is picked up by the detector, a phototransistor positioned directly above the test zone.
3) The phototransistor sends an analog electrical signal to an A/D converter, which changes it to digital form.
4)The microprocessor then converts this digital reading to a relative reflectance value by referring it to a calibration standard.
5)Finally, the analyzer compares the reflectance value with the defined range limits (reflectance values that are programmed into the analyzer for each parameter) and outputs a semi quantitative result.
Each test pad on the HuaShengYuan urinalysis Strip is read photometrically, producing results in approximately 80 seconds.
