The bark of Nishikimatsu layered by cork cracks thick and makes a hexagon pattern. Nishikimatsu is a variant of Kuromatsu and born in Takamatsu. The strongly waved bark covering the outer circumference of a tree trunk is the greatest features and creates an antiquated atmosphere. Nowadays the number of Nishikimatsu producers has decreased and the amount of distribution has reduced.

History
Takamatsu, the prefectural capital city of Kagawa prefecture on Shikoku in Japan is the place of production of the highest quality bonsai. There are over 100 highly skilled bonsai craftsmen. They have been influenced by each other and devoted themselves to improve their techniques.

Kinashi/Kokubunji Area locates on the west side of Takamatsu in Kagawa Prefecture, pine trees fields growing Kuromatsu, Nishikimatsu (Japanese brocade pine) or Goyoumatsu extend. Moreover, there are a lot of bonsai gardens there. Kagawa prefecture is Japan's top producer of pine-tree bonsai and accounts for 80% of domestic shipment.



Further back in history, it is said that bonsai originates in the Edo and the Bunka period (from 1804 to 1818). People pot a shrub growing wild and started selling them. After the grafting technique became widespread in the Meiji era, the production of bonsai expanded throughout Japan.

Despite the continuous growth of producing bonsai, after Japan participated in WW2, the pine trees in the bonsai field transformed to firewood due to lack of financial and material. Bonsai was temporarily extinguished during the war, but only a slight grated pine tree made an opportunity to revive. As Japan's postwar economy grows, bonsai became more popular and the demand expanded at a time.



Takamatsu, well-drained granite type sandy loam with a few rainy or a lot of sunny days is the best place for bonsai. Due to its favorable place and the calm Seto Inland Sea climate enables to grow a unique and stately bonsai.

The techniques such as prune and grafting have been pass down and refined, and Takamatsu finally became one of Japan's top producer of bonsai. Takamatsu Bonsai has a repute for not only its beautiful shape but also free from causing the root to rot.

In 2011, Takamatsu holds "The 11th Asia-Pacific Bonsai and Suiseki Convention and Exhibition" and it became a chance to make it famous to the world. It was the first exhibition in Japan and bonsai fans gathered from over 40 countries such as Asia, European and US countries.

Moreover, lots of bonsai fans participated in the "Takamatsu Bonsai Convention in 2014" and it made Takamatsu better known. Today Takamatsu Bonsai became the top production of pine-tree bonsai in the world and buyers from overseas came to visit Takamatsu constantly.
