Why We Need Hyperbaric Oxygen Chambers?

The first published report of the use of HBOT in an individual with ASD was in 1994. In this report, treatment with HBOT resulted in improvements in mood and social interactions in a three year old child with ASD. The number of treatments and other HBOT parameters were not reported. In 2002, Heuser et al. reported a “striking improvement” in behavior, memory, social interaction, verbalizations and cognitive functioning in a 4 year old boy with ASD after HBOT treatment at 1.3 atm/24% oxygen for 10 consecutive days. Another investigator observed significant objective improvements in coloring skills (seeFigure ​as well as speech and self-help skills in a 17 year old child with ASD using HBOT at 1.5 atm/100% oxygen for 20 sessions. Burke noted improvements in 2 children with ASD using HBOT at 1.3 atm/28% oxygen, including improvements in communication, aggressiveness and social interaction. Another report noted objective improvements in one child with ASD in handwriting. after 40 treatments with HBOT at 1.3 atm/24% oxygen, as well as improvements in fine motor skills, bowel function, language and communication. One
investigator reported improvements in language, social interaction and overall cognition in a 3 year old boy with ASD using HBOT at 1.3 atm/24% oxygen for 40 treatments. This child also had chronic diarrhea and had the first normal bowel movement in his life with HBOT treatment. In another report, 23 patients with ASD had various improvements in social interaction, language and repetitive behaviors with HBOT at 1.5 atm. Finally, one prospective study of 20 children with ASD reported improvements in communication, social interaction and stereotypical behaviors after 20 HBOT sessions at 1.5 atm/100% oxygen.

1.How does hyperbaric oxygen chamber work?



Hyperbarics is a technology in which the air pressure in the environment is increased. When a person’s body is placed in a more pressure environment, it absorbs more oxygen molecules per volume of compressed air.The body normally transports oxygen via the hemoglobin of the red blood cells. By increasing the air pressure, oxygen is then driven into the body’s fluids, allowing a super-saturation of tissues and organs with oxygen. The increased pressure infuses the body with oxygen, even reaching injuries with damaged circulation. 



2. Is it safe?



Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is prescribed by a physician and performed under medical supervision. Although there are minor risks like all medical treatments, overall hyperbaric oxygen therapy is extremely safe. 



3.How does hyperbaric oxygen help brain injury or stroke?



When cells in the brain die, either from trauma or lack of oxygen, blood plasma leaks out into surrounding brain tissue causing swelling and reducing blood flow. These otherwise normal cells go dormant because they can't function without the appropriate amount of oxygen. HBOT dramatically increases the oxygen carried in the blood plasma, making oxygen available to heal damaged capillary walls, preventing plasma leakage and reducing swelling. As the swelling decreases, blood flow can be restored to the dormant tissue (neovascularization) and these cells then have the potential to function again.


4. Are there any side effects?


Portable Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber is completely safe. The most common side effect is discomfort to the ears caused by pressure changes. To minimize the risk, patients learn to promote the adequate clearing of your ears during pressurization. Some patients may feel tired and dizzy after using hyperbaric chamber first time. When the chamber is pressurizing, your ears will feel the change in pressure inside the chamber. You might feel a little painful in your ears, to equalize the pressure and avoid the feeling of fullness in your ears, you can clear your ears by chewing (gum or food), swallowing, yawning. once the chamber is fully pressurized, this feeling will return to normal. You can sleep, meditate, read, watch movie, listen to music, etc.
