What is Harissa ?
Harissa is a fiery North African paste of red chilies blended with olive oil, garlic, salt and spices, such as caraway seeds, ground cumin and coriander. It is as delicious as it is versatile.
Origin of Harissa :
With roots in Northern Africa, Harissa is Ubiquitous in Mediterranean pantries; especially in Tunisian cuisine .Harissa’s exact place of origin is uncertain. However, many believe the blend was first created in the spice markets of Tunisia, the first African nation to incorporate chili peppers into cuisine during a16thcentury Spanish occupation.Today, Tunisia remains the world’s top exporter of Harissa, though many other countries and spice distributors also produce the fiery mixture.
Across Tunisia, Harissa is often made in advance and stored for use in a variety of dishes. This orangey-red in color sauce is used not only as a condiment for grilled meats and fish or stirred into soups and stews for a hot kick but, is also an integral part of a countless variety of recipes and numerous Tunisian dishes.
How to Use Harissa :
It can be used as a condiment or as an ingredient in cooking and provides a real boost and give some heat with a lot of flavoras an accompaniment to vegetables and pulses and soups. Also it can be served as a dipping sauce slathered on bread.
