Polymer polyethylene has 300-700million ultra-high molecular weight, high impact strength, wear resistance and sliding characteristics. At the same time, this material also has ultra-low temperature resistance and generally can withstand about 250 degrees below zero.
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers are added to the UHMWPE matrix. Because the matrix and fibers have the same chemical characteristics, they have good chemical compatibility and strong interfacial bonding between the two components. Thus, composite materials with excellent mechanical properties can be obtained. The tensile strength, modulus, impact strength and creep resistance of UHMWPE can be greatly improved by adding UHMWPE fibers. Compared with pure UHMWPE, the maximum stress and modulus of UHMWPE can be increased by 160% and 60% respectively by adding 60% UHMWPE fiber in UHMWPE. This self-reinforcing UHMWPE material is especially suitable for biomedical load-bearing applications.
