Lockable gas springs incorporate a mechanism enabling the user to "lock" the piston rod at any point in its travel through a plunger that protrudes from the piston rod. When this plunger is depressed, the piston rod is free to operate as normal. When the plunger is released, the piston rod can be locked at any point in the stroke.


There are two types of rigid lockable gas springs: Type Y and type L. Type Y remains rigid in the compression direction and the type L remains rigid in the extension direction.


The recliner chair lockable gas spring is usually designed as type Y lockable gas spring, which remains rigid in the compression direction to keep safe and comfortable when the angle of the recliner chair adjusted.
